Make-A-Wish Donation

Have you ever wanted to make someone’s wish come true?  Mrs. Bast’s Language classes may have done just that.  For a writing project, they were to write a letter to Santa.  Extra credit was given to those that wanted to write more letters.  These letters are being taken to Macy’s Department Store where all stamped letters addressed to Santa at the North Pole and dropped in to the special Santa letterbox will be counted.  Macy’s will donate $1.00 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, up to $1,000,000.  Mrs. Bast’s class has raised over $300.00 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation by writing these letters to Santa.  They may just have made someone’s wish come true.

Chess Club

Chess Club

Sponsor:  Mrs. Walters

v                 This club is open to any student that attends the St. James Middle School.

v                 The meetings will be held every week on Wednesday after school from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. unless cancelled via school announcements.  (Rides must be here by 4:40 p.m., otherwise, you will not be allowed to participate.)

What to expect:

Chess

This is a formal group that meets once a week to play chess against others.  The student learns strategies to help his/her game.  An in house tournament is held and trophies and/or medals are given to the top three players at the end of the year assembly.  This group also attends the state competition held in Jefferson City, usually in March on a Saturday.  Sometimes, if we have enough interest/funding the group may try to attend a competition held in St. Louis, I believe in February on a Saturday. Sometimes, I am able to schedule another school to come play an informal meet after school during our regular practice times. You must attend at least 10 times to be considered a member of chess club.  If a student can’t make it to a meeting, they should let me know.  Attendance is important especially when determining who will participate in the away tournaments for the school.  To participate in this club, you must have acceptable grades and behavior as discussed in the Student Handbook under the heading Extracurricular Activities.

What to expect:

This is a formal group that meets once a week to practice answering questions by using a buzzer set like in a game show.  Students will sometimes answer questions on paper or on a computer as well.

The St. James Middle School hosts a tournament in March or April that four to eight schools attend.  (I can definitely use parent volunteers to make this possible.)

I am hoping that other schools will hold a tournament this year.

In the past I have been able to schedule another school to come play an informal meet during our regular practice time (this depends a lot on the school’s funding for the year and gas prices).
