Middle Years

We have a new resource for parents on this website.  It is called Middle Years and is a way "to provide busy parents with practical ideas that promote school success, parent involvement and more effective parenting".

Middle School children go through dramatic changes and desperately need their parents' support.  Many parents want to help, but aren't sure what to do.  With Middle Years, you can get the help you need.  Every issue offers practical ideas to:
   * Improve school success.
   * Strengthen the home and school partnership.
   * Enhance parenting skills
   * Strenghten family life.
   * Understand middle schooler's behavior.
   * Build positive character traits.

Trivia Question

I will try to post a trivia question every week.  The winner will picked from everyone who can write down the question and correct answer on a piece of paper and return in the first day after the question is posted.  I will draw a winner from a hat.  To get in the hat you must have the correct answer.

The Moldau by Smetna presents what type of composition?

This is a plea to all Alumni!

This is a plea to all Alumni!  Think back to those wonderful years you had in school.  All the sports you played in, the clubs you joined, maybe you were a cheerleader!  Wasn't it great being a part of that group! What about Band?  Marching in parades, playing at football games, going to contest!  WOW!  But, it was expensive wasn't it?  That is a problem.  One that more kids are facing every year.  Is your old instrument just sitting around collecting dust?  Would you like to donate it to the school so that the kids who can't afford the cost of an instrument can be a part of the band?  We are especially in need of a Saxophone.  So, if you are moved to help, you could make a great difference in a child's life.

8th Grade Band Corner

August 17,

The 7th and 8th grade bands will be performing in the 2010 Grape and Fall Festival Parade on September 11.  Students will need to have their MS music shirt.  I am trying to get another order of them in before the parade.  Cost will be $10 if they need a new one.  If I don't get them in, students can wear a red or white shirt that says St. James or STJ or Tigers.  We will wear shorts (of any color) and tennis shoes as well.

There are many events that day that conflict with the parade.  I will excuse students that are in a sporting event or involved in the parade in another way.  Any other reasons should be submitted the week of the parade so I can either excuse them or give an alternate assignment.  The parade is worth 250 points.

Students will need to show up at the HS band room by 8:45.  The parade is at 11:00am and there will be free food afterwords at the HS stadium.  Students will need to make sure they take care of their instruments before they leave for the day.

6th Grade Band

August 17,

Welcome to beginning band!  In this article you will find weekly updates as to what is going on in band class.  Please check it often as it will answer many questions.

We are currently trying instruments out to make sure students have made the right choices.  I will send a sheet home by next week that states if your student has successfully tried the instrument they want to play.  Please try not to get instruments until after this comes home.  Don't worry if you already have one though.

Mozingo Music Night:  September 9th at 5:30pm in the band room and 6:00pm in the commons.  We will have a parents meeting first and then Mozingo music will be in the commons to sell or rent items to you.  You do not have to use Mozingo but this is the only time they will have items at our school.  If you miss the meeting night, you will have to get your items on your own.  I will also be checking out school instruments that night for a $15 fee.  Checks payable to St. James Band.  Those instruments will be first come first serve and I only have a few of each instrument type.

The sheet I sent home said this is a manditory meeting.  I would like to change that wording to "Attendace Highly Encouraged"  I know many of you have other activities that night.  Try to see if someone can come by between 5:30 and 8:30pm to pick up information and get basic items like the book and instrument accessories.   You don't have to be there all night.  You can also call Mozingo Music and order your items ahead of time and they can just leave them for you.

I know beginning parents have lots of questions, so please don't hesitate to call me or email me.  I am crazy busy right now so some days I don't get to my email or even my phone before bed.  I will get back to you as soon as I can.
