The time is fast approaching for the 7th and 8th grade bands to go to the Union Middle School Music Festival. This is a great opportunity for our students to perform in a nice auditorium for a panel of quality judges. Last year our 7th grade band earned a II rating and the 8th grade earned a I rating. That was a historical event for St. James as it was the first time we have ever gone to contest and we came home with two trophies!
Parents are welcome to come chaperone or just to go watch. I believe the festival is free to the public so come out and watch our students perform under pressure! The festival site is Union HS located in Union Missouri. It is less than an hour’s drive and the performances are not very long, so it won’t take up an entire day.
Students need to have nice pants, shoes, and the middle school music shirt. This is REQUIRED for this performance. Let’s all did up our shirts soon so we are not filing through the laundry the night before.
The event is a graded event. It is worth 400 points in the 3rd quarter grade. Attendance is required. If you have a conflict that you know of, please let me know ASAP so I can find a way to work it out. Only school events or family emergencies are reasons for an excused absence. Please clear this date!
I do need a few parents to ride the bus or haul the trailer to the event. If you are interested, please contact me.
I hope that we can get a large crowd in the audience. It will help settle the students down if there are friendly faces in the audience, not to mention, we need to support our students efforts in band and choir. The more you encourage them in these areas, the more likely they are to stick with them.

I will try to post a trivia question every week. The winner will picked from everyone who can write down the question and correct answer on a piece of paper and return in the first day after the question is posted. I will draw a winner from a hat. To get in the hat you must have the correct answer.

6th Grade Band

So far, the semester is really going well. We are farther in book 1 than any other class has ever been able to do and the classes are learning to read music much better. I have not been collecting the last few practice records due to time constraints in class, however, I will be collecting 19-23 next week. Please make sure your student is up to date on these and that they are signed.
Band Detention: For those of you confused about what band detention is, here is an explanation. I have been concerned about student grades due to practice records so we re-implemented band detention for those students not doing their practice. Band detention is every Thursday after school until 4:30. During that time, students are to practice the entire time. This time makes up their missing points and raises their grade. Students can get help from me on Thursday as well wether they are in band detention or not. It is my one day dedicated to nothing but middle school students. Some students have already taken advantage of that and significantly improved their scores.
The Spring concert is coming up fast! We will be sharing the concert with the MS choir so that parents can clear less dates! The concert will be less than an hour and very entertaining. I hope to see all of you there! If you check the dates on the school calendar of events, it is only listed as MS Choir. It will be both and I will try to have that changed soon.
