Dr. Merlyn Johnson

Welcome to the St. James R-I School District!
One of the attributes that attracted me to St. James R-I is the pride the community has in its school!  It is not only a great place to learn, but a great place to raise a family in general.

This website is one of the communication avenues we use to keep our citizens connected to the district. I encourage you to use it to stay informed of the great endeavors undertaken by our staff and students.
We value input and feedback as we collaborate to improve in our quest to ensure all students achieve at the highest level.  We strongly believe we must encourage, engage, and educate each of our students well by providing excellence in instructional practices and extra-curricular opportunities.

St. James R-I Schools is a great place to learn and collaborate, and I continue to feel honored and blessed to be the leader of such a high achieving district!!!

  • About Dr. Johnson

Merlyn Johnson was raised in La Monte, Missouri. While a student at La Monte R-IV Schools, Merlyn participated in many student organizations and played soccer, basketball, and baseball. He attended Williams Baptist College in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas. He returned to Missouri in 1998 when he was offered a teaching job at North Pemiscot Co. R-I School District in the Bootheel. While in Southeast Missouri, Merlyn worked as a science, math, and social studies teacher at the junior high and high school levels. He also coached baseball, softball, and was a Beta Club sponsor. While at Clarkton C-4 Schools, he was promoted to the position of high school principal, where he served in that capacity for five years. In 2010, Merlyn moved to Summersville, MO where he served as the high school principal for one year and the district superintendent for five years.

He is blessed to have met his wife Amy at a Beta Club Convention in 2004, who was a business teacher and Beta Club sponsor at Van Buren R-I Schools. Amy teaches business classes at JFH High School. They have two daughters: Alyssa, a senior at JFH High School, and Reagan, a kindergartner.
