Dr. Merlyn Johnson

Welcome to the St. James R-I School District!

One of the attributes that attracted me to St. James R-I is the pride the community has in its school!  It is not only a great place to learn, but a great place to raise a family in general. My wife, Amy, and I are very pleased with our decision to bring our family to St. James.

This website is one of the communication avenues we use to keep our citizens connected to the district. I encourage you to use it to stay informed of the great endeavors undertaken by our staff and students.

We value input and feedback as we collaborate to improve in our quest to ensure all students achieve at the highest level.  We strongly believe we must encourage, engage, and educate each of our students well by providing excellence in instructional practices and extra-curricular opportunities.

As a participating Capturing Kids Hearts District, we will continue to aspire to raise the bar for improved student achievement. The CKH doctrine guides our staff to create high-achieving centers of learning by strengthening students' connectedness to others through enhancing healthy bonds with their teachers and establishing collaborative agreements of acceptable behavior.

St. James R-I Schools is a great place to learn and collaborate, and I continue to feel honored and blessed to be the leader of such a high achieving district!!!

About Dr. Johnson:

Merlyn Johnson was raised in La Monte, Missouri with a brother and a sister. While a student at La Monte R-IV Schools, Merlyn participated in many student organizations and played soccer, basketball, and baseball. He attended college at Williams Baptist College in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas. He returned to Missouri in 1998 when he was offered a teaching job at North Pemiscot Co. R-I School District in the Bootheel. While in Southeast Missouri, Merlyn worked as a science, math, and social studies teacher at the junior high and high school levels. He also coached baseball, softball, and was a Beta Club sponsor. While at Clarkton C-4 Schools, he was promoted to the position of high school principal, where he served in that capacity for five years. In 2010, Merlyn moved to Summersville, MO where he served as the high school principal for one year and the district superintendent for five years. It was during his time at Summersville R-II Schools, when Merlyn earned his Doctor of Education degree from Lindenwood University in St. Charles, MO. He earned his M.S. and Ed.S. in Administration at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, MO. At Williams Baptist College he earned his B.S.E. degree while running cross-country and playing baseball.

He is blessed to have met his wife Amy at a Beta Club Convention in 2004, who was a business teacher and Beta Club sponsor at Van Buren R-I Schools. They married in Van Buren in 2007. They have two daughters: Alyssa, a sophomore at JFH High School, and Reagan, who is four.

Merlyn came to St. James R-I Schools during the summer of 2016. Merlyn and his family are excited about the future at St. James and look forward to continuing to build relationships with the great people within the community and District.
