Playground Safety Update

The St. James R-1 School District is proud to announce the completion of a playground safety improvement project, funded through the 2024 Playground Scrap Tire Grant. This summer, approximately 3,200 square feet of poured-in-place recycled rubber surfacing was installed on the second and third-grade playground, creating a safer and more accessible space for students.

The new surface replaces part of the existing blacktop and pea gravel with a 2.5-inch layer of recycled rubber, which is the recommended thickness to cushion falls from standing height. The material is made from Missouri-sourced recycled products, reinforcing the district’s commitment to both student safety and environmental responsibility.

“We are very thankful to have received the 2024 Playground Scrap Tire Grant,” said Dr. April Williams, who wrote and secured the $39,288 grant. “This funding allowed us to bring a part of our vision to life, by creating a beautiful and, most importantly, safer playground surface for our students. Additionally, through this grant, we helped recycle Missouri rubber products, which was a win for the environment as well. We appreciate the Missouri Department of Natural Resources for selecting our project to be a grant recipient this year.”

This project supports the St. James R-1 School District’s mission to empower students through caring relationships, academic excellence, and community partnerships. By investing in safer play environments, the district continues to prioritize the well-being and growth of its students both inside and outside the classroom.
