We want to share with you one of our core priorities when it comes to your child's education: improving student attendance. The impact of attendance on academic performance is significant, spanning from the early years of kindergarten through the heights of high school achievement. As children grow more independent, families remain crucial in ensuring their consistent and safe attendance, fostering a deep understanding of the importance of being present for both their educational journey and future endeavors.

Within the St. James R-1 School District, we uphold the attendance standards outlined by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). The benchmark requires a minimum of 90% attendance during 90% of instructional time – often known as the 90/90 rule. We are excited to report that our district has been working hard at meeting that goal consistently. We want to keep up the good work!

While we understand that unavoidable circumstances, such as health issues, can lead to absences, we also recognize the detrimental impact excessive absenteeism can have on a student's academic progress.

Here are some tips that will help us maintain our great attendance:

• Establish consistent sleep routines and morning habits.

• Prepare clothes and backpacks the night before to streamline mornings.

• Encourage regular attendance, except in cases of genuine illness.

• Plan family vacations during school breaks.

• When doctor's appointments are necessary, try to minimize missed school time.

• If your child faces apprehension about attending school, our teachers and counselors are here to help.

• Have backup transportation plans in place, involving family, neighbors, or fellow parents, in case of unforeseen circumstances.
