New High School Principal

St. James, Missouri - April 18, 2024 - St. James R-1 School District proudly announces the appointment of Dr. Greg Harlan as the new principal of St. James High School, effective July 1, 2024. With a deep commitment to the district and extensive experience in education, Dr. Harlan brings a wealth of expertise and a vision for fostering a dynamic learning environment.

Dr. Harlan's journey in education began as a teacher at St. James High School and Middle School in 1995. Over the years, he has taught a range of subjects from science to physical education as well as serving in administrative roles such as Activities Director and Assistant Principal, demonstrating versatility and dedication to student success. Dr. Harlan holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from Central Missouri State University, a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Missouri Baptist University, an Educational Specialist degree (2017), and more recently completed his Doctor of Education, EdD (2020). Both of these advanced degrees are from William Woods University.

Motivated by his alma mater and a desire to contribute to its continuous improvement, Dr. Harlan expressed, "It is my goal to help each student pursue their desired careers or educational paths."

With a vision for St. James High School centered on creating a positive educational experience, Dr. Harlan aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to thrive academically and personally.

A strong school community is paramount to Dr. Harlan, who plans to engage with students, teachers, and parents through effective communication and partnerships. He stated, "I am looking forward to collaborating with faculty, staff, students, and parents to improve academic achievement and school culture."

Dr. Harlan's commitment extends to ensuring all students feel valued and supported, regardless of background or abilities. He intends to create a supportive environment where students can excel academically, emotionally, and socially.

On a personal note, Dr. Harlan, a lifelong resident of St. James, shared insights into his family life, stating, "My wife Cheryl and I have been married for 31 years and have three sons: Jake, Ryan, and Cooper. Cheryl, myself, and our children are all St. James High School alumni. (Cooper will graduate in May.) My family and I enjoy spending time together, watching sports, attending concerts, and being active in our church.
