The St. James R-1 School District has received a 2025 Nonplayground Scrap Tire Grant in the amount of $17,263 from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. The grant will fund the development of outdoor learning environments that provide opportunities for students to collaborate, interact, and strengthen their social and emotional development.
One of the new learning areas will be located alongside the Tiger Trail sidewalk project, creating additional space for students and community members to connect and learn together. In addition, Buddy Benches will be introduced in playground areas to offer a supportive place where students can find a friend and make new connections.

Through this grant, the district will install 11 picnic tables to create two outdoor learning spaces at Lucy Wortham James Elementary and place 8 park benches around the elementary campus.
“We were very excited to receive the Nonplayground Scrap Tire Grant. This is part of a plan that the district has been working on to improve outdoor spaces to provide locations for learning and collaboration,” said Dr. April Williams, Assistant Superintendent of St. James R-1 School District.
The district is committed to creating engaging spaces that enhance learning and promote meaningful relationships among students, staff, and the community.
