St. James R-1 School District is proud to share that Lucy Wortham James Elementary has been named a 2025- 2026 Exemplary School Library by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).

This honor recognizes library programs that go above and beyond in supporting student learning, strengthening instruction, and serving as a valuable resource for both educators and the school community. The designation reflects a strong commitment to academic excellence and meaningful student engagement.

The DESE Exemplary Library recognition is based on a rigorous scoring process that evaluates 21 indicators tied to effective library services, instruction, and program impact. Schools must demonstrate high levels of performance across all areas, earning at least 38 out of 42 possible points to receive the distinction.

Lucy Wortham James Elementary’s library program stood out for its ability to support classroom learning, provide access to diverse resources, and create a welcoming environment where students can explore, learn, and grow. The program plays an important role in helping students build critical thinking skills, develop a love of reading, and navigate information in meaningful ways.
