Since the start of the school year, groups of St. James Middle School and St. James R-1 High School students have been heading into the community to volunteer at commodity distribution through the St. James Caring Center.
Commodity distribution is one of the Caring Center’s benevolent services, helping provide food and resources to families in our community. By giving their time to help pack, organize, and distribute items, our students are learning an important lesson that goes beyond the classroom: we all have a role to play in caring for the people around us.
Through caring relationships and community partnerships, we’re helping empower students to see the needs around them, step up and serve, and understand the difference they can make!

Today, we’re celebrating our custodial team and the important work they do every day. From keeping our buildings clean and safe to making sure classrooms and common spaces are ready for students and staff, they help create the environment where our schools can learn.

National Honor Society (NHS) officers recently attended a workshop with the Community Blood Center of the Ozarks to learn how to promote blood drives and build excitement among their fellow students.
Opportunities like this give students a chance to develop leadership skills while finding meaningful ways to serve others. Thanks to Mr. Adams for giving our Tigers ways to grow in Engaged Citizenship and Future-Focused thinking!

Kickball: Think, Move, Learn! ❤️🐯🤍
Middle school PE students wrapped up their kickball unit by putting both their minds and bodies to work. Their KWL reflections helped them connect what they Knew, what they Wondered, and what they Learned. Thanks to Coach Karnes and Coach Purvis for getting students moving and thinking!

Junior Beta Leaders Are Headed to Nationals! ❤️🐯🤍
Our St. James Middle School Junior Beta Club Leadership group had a great time at the Beta Leadership Summit in Cape Girardeau.
The group qualified for Nationals with their “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” skit for the All the World’s a Stage competition. The Beta Blitz team also qualified for Nationals with a fun design inspired by Dolly Parton.
And a big thank you to Sponsors Mrs. Watson and Mrs. McCurdy for supporting our students through this experience!

A Colorful Science Surprise! 🍂🎨🐯
Fourth graders in Mrs. Mendenhall’s art class turned science into art by creating their own fall leaves with “invisible” ink made from turmeric. Students drew their designs, painted over them with hand sanitizer, and then used turmeric to reveal the hidden color!
What looked like a simple leaf quickly became a science experiment, with students discovering how the materials interacted to create a colorful reveal.
Critical Thinking starts with curiosity, experimentation, and asking, “what will happen?”

Our 6th-grade Ruling Our eXperiences (ROX) students took on a teamwork challenge! They had to make it from start to finish without falling off their marshmallows into the “chocolate river.” And they had to move quickly because the Marshmallow Monster (aka Ms. Doddema) was ready to eat any marshmallow left empty!
Listening, communicating, and supporting one another helped the girls find their way across, making this a fun example of Effective Communication!

Elementary artists are once again sharing their artwork through Artsonia, an online art gallery. Last week, Mrs. Meurer worked with Mrs. Cahill and our 2nd and 4th graders to upload their artwork and get their galleries started. Families can sign up to view their child’s artwork throughout the school year.
It’s another opportunity for our Tigers to share their ideas and creativity with others while building Effective Communication skills!

September Students of the Month at LWJE! 🐾📚🌟
The Student of the Month tradition is back at Lucy Wortham James Elementary, and our Tigers are starting the year by showing what it means to be kind.
September’s character trait was KINDNESS. From helping a classmate to including others, our students showed that even small acts of kindness can make a big difference.
At the end of the month, each teacher selected one student who stood out for demonstrating kindness throughout the month. These Tigers were celebrated as the September Students of the Month at the all-school assembly last Friday!

Last Friday, a group of students spent the day at East Central College for Art Day, exploring different workshops and learning from ECC professors and local artists. They had the opportunity to experiment with new techniques and discover different ways to express ideas creatively.

Powderpuff Football Showdown: Juniors Win! 🏈🐯❤️
Yesterday, juniors and seniors faced off in the Powderpuff championship as part of Homecoming week. The tournament brought some friendly competition to the week while raising funds for our girls soccer team.
Thanks to everyone who helped organize the tournament and to the students who made it such a fun Homecoming tradition!

Ms. Sutton’s Creative Writing students spent time in the library diving into the world of children’s literature! They explored picture books and looked at how authors use words and illustrations to communicate big ideas in a smaller format.
Now, they’re putting those ideas to work as they prepare to learn about short-form writing, putting their Effective Communication skills to the test!

First graders put their Critical Thinking skills to work during an animal scavenger hunt! As they explored, students observed animals, looked for clues, and used what they learned in their science unit to identify what they found. Keep those curious minds working, Tigers!

Tiger Express Apparel Opens Its Doors! ❤️🐯🤍
Tiger Express Apparel, the student-run business created through our Student-Based Enterprise class, celebrated its storefront grand opening last night!
From creating products to managing a storefront and working with customers, students are gaining real-world experience that prepares them for what comes next. It’s a great example of being Future Focused and turning classroom learning into skills they can take with them beyond high school.
Way to go, Mrs. Hance and the Tiger Express team!

Students practiced reading facial expressions and body language, even deciding whether their “boss’s” expression was a good time to ask for a raise! They also explored what makes a successful collaboration and put their teamwork skills to the test with a fun “feet-on” activity.
